Fall’s bounty. A seasonal reminder to celebrate and give pause as we experience sincere abundance…local harvest fests, root vegetable flair, our fur-lined vests and ankle boots making their appearance…and with the bounty, comes the gentle tug to share this with others; so they too can feel the energy behind the abundance uniquely gifted to fall, and KEEP HOPE ALIVE.
The same gentle tug we feel at fall’s bounty is what leads us to contributing through charitable work and KEEPING HOPE ALIVE. An outlet to share the abundance we’ve garnered in our lives. When you feel so emotionally and energetically full, you want others to have the opportunity to feel that way too. It lifts us up to be able to give a jump start by offering the universal fuel: hope.
It’s like the story about this guy who fell into a deep, deep hole in the middle of the street. His persistent yelling to passerby’s above proved pointless as they ignored him and continued on. Finally, a rabbi peeks down, but he’s daunted: “I’ll pray for you”. Then, a police officer peers down the hole, but he just shrugs: “Hmmm. This is one for the fire department”. Finally, the man’s friend comes by and upon realizing it’s his buddy in the hole, he jumps in with him. The man looks at his friend shocked, puzzled: “Now, we’re both down here!” But his friend calmly looks at the man and soothes: “Yeah, but I’ve been down here before and I know the way out.”
When we’ve overcome our own struggles, we want to share that with others. They may be friends, family, sons and daughters…they may be strangers or people we’ve never met, but we will jump in the hole because we know how to help them out of it. We are simultaneously proud, eager, and intent. Proud that our past experience means even more now, eager to be the one able to offer a solution, and charitable with our time and effort because we know how great it feels to be on the receiving end when the situation seems really, really bleak.
And that is what I love about working with OCW2W and other charitable causes that hit home for me. It’s about seeing them as the person in the struggle rather than the effort required to overcome the struggle. It’s about seeing their challenges and knowing that with you, they too can figure a way out of the hole. It’s about sharing from our own abundance and making HOPE a reality for them.
Thank you to those who, as you are feeling abundant and blessed in your own life, make a concerted effort to reach out to those who find themselves in a once familiar hole. Not only have you completed the giving circle, you have given someone else a chance to do the same.
Don’t make Fall a time of literally falling into the hole, but a time of celebrating our bounty of hope and sharing it with others.
